The low-stimulation session

The low-stimulation session

For people who find an ordinary hour of talking tiring: bright rooms, a quick back-and-forth, or the feeling of being watched on a screen. It is the same counseling, with four things turned down.

Who it is for

  • Adults who tire in bright, busy rooms

  • People who need a moment before they answer

  • Anyone who would rather keep the camera off

Four things we turn down

Light, pace, silence, camera

  • Light

A lamp and daylight. We keep the overhead lights off unless you want them, and the blinds stay as you like them.

  • Pace

Pauses are part of the hour. Take a minute to find the words; nobody fills the space for you.

  • Silence

Quiet is allowed. If you want to sit for a while, you can, and we say what we are doing before we change the subject.

  • Camera off

When we meet by video the camera can stay off, or we can talk by phone. You can turn it on partway through, or never.

Setting it up

How you ask for it

  1. 01

Step 1: Tell us when you write

Say what to turn down. One word is enough: light, quiet, camera.

  2. 02

Step 2: We set the room

The lamp is on and the overhead lights are off before you arrive. By video, we agree on the camera first.

  3. 03

Step 3: Change it any time

If something is too much partway through, say so and we adjust.

  4. 04

Step 4: None of it is a rule

It is a menu, not a program. Keep what helps and drop what does not.

What this is not

What a low-stimulation session is not

It is the same counseling, with the room and the pace changed. It is not a different method, a diagnosis, or a treatment for anything. Being highly sensitive or an introvert is a way some people are, and nothing here treats it as a problem to fix.

Length and frequency are yours to set with your counselor, and no number of sessions is promised. How the sessions are paid for is on the fees page.

Questions

Three questions about the session

Do I have to ask for all four?

No. Ask for any, none, or one at a time. Many people begin with the light.

Can I switch to a standard session later?

Yes. Nothing is locked in, and you can change it from one session to the next.

Is it the same price as a usual session?

The fee depends on the length of the session, and it is given to you in writing before you start.

Want the room turned down?

Write with the times that suit you and say what to turn down.
